The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) turned over a one-year transfer ban handed out to Chelsea in 2010 by FIFA for the signing of French youngster Kakuta. It was the samepunishmentimposed today onBarcelonafor breaching rules on the transfer of players aged under 18.
In that case, the English club was accused of forcing the player to break his contract with his previous club, Lens. The French club then sued Kakuta for not completing his contract.
In the end, CAS heard that the supposed contract the player had with Lens was not valid and so had no hesitation in overturning the decision passed down by the game's governing body.
